Karl Goetz Medal - Kienast 181: "Rumania Enters the War" (1916)
A powerful and sharply satirical creation by Karl Goetz, Kienast 181, titled "Rumania Enters the War" (Rumäniens Kriegseintritt), marks Rumania's declaration of war against Austria on August 27, 1916. As typical of Goetz's politically charged style, the medal reflects the Austrian-German view that Rumania's alignment with the Entente was influenced—if not purchased—by foreign gold.
The obverse bears the inscription "Bratianu, the sincerely.", referencing Ion Brătianu, premier of Rumania, with Goetz's unmistakable touch of irony. The reverse inscription reads:
"Rumania's play with the swing, August 27, 1916."
Symbolism is central to the design: a scale tips visibly in favor of gold, suggesting financial motives behind the decision, while dice represent the gamble undertaken by Rumania and the Entente. Goetz's characteristic blend of caricature, commentary, and historical narrative is fully present in this medal.
Cast in 58 mm, the piece is bold and expressive, making it a fascinating artifact of World War I political propaganda rendered in metal.
